- About Me:
- Bennie J. (Jerome) Smith aka 'Benny J' was born in Danville, KY and was raised simultaneously in Danville-Lexington. He attended Lafayette High School and played on the Generals Football team and earned a letter his senior year as a defensive back. While preparing for graduation from high school, he auditioned for the KSU Marching Band and was awarded a music scholarship. Benny J was also a participant in the KSU Upward Bound Program under the direction of Ms. Hattie Duncan and Mr. Al Williams for 3 summers during his high school years. During his tenure at KSU, he played in the Marching, Jazz, Pep, and Concert bands.
During his freshman year, he had a unique opportunity to perform in the jazz ensemble under the direction of Mr. David Anderson along with several members who would go on to form one of the music industry's top entertainment groups, MIDNIGHT STAR, founded by 5-Time Grammy Nominee Reggie Calloway. During his years with the Marching Band, he was Section Leader of the Saxophone Section and Band President.
Benny J also pledged and was initiated into the ALPHA UPSILON CHAPTER of KAPPA ALPHA PSI FRATERNITY, Inc. during Spring 1978 as part of the "UBIQUITY" line consisting of BJ Smith*Reginald Scott*Joseph Reeves*Steven Cottrell*... He was also a member of the Student Government Association as a Student Court Justice, Entertainment Committee, and was also a member of the KSU Yearbook Staff. Finally, he was a floor counselor (1st floor) at Combs Hall for the incoming Freshman Class of '78, which consisted mostly of students from Louisville, KY.
Benny J went on to pursue his musical interests and joined the CALCULUS II BAND, which was comprised of several KSU Marching and Pep band members (George Stone, Rick Abbott, Tony Ward, Tony Hartsfield--early members included Tracy Owens, Vanessa Smith, Robert Shipley, Charles Bond, and Philip Bibbs) under the leadership of Band Leader Ronald E. Booth. The band started out in Frankfort and eventually relocated to Cleveland, OH. After conflict engulfed the band, he returned to Lexington, KY and began a refreshing start and joined Lexington-based RAZZ-MA-DAZZ BAND.
Between these two bands, Benny J. had the BLESSING and PRIVILEGE of being on the same billing with several national recording artists, including: MIDNIGHT STAR; S.O.S. BAND; ROGER & LESTER TROUTMAN of ZAPP; EVELYN CHAMPAGNE KING; INSTANT FUNK; CHOCOLATE MILK BAND; READY FOR THE WORLD; BOBBI HUMPHREY; ALEXANDER O'NEAL; DAZZ BAND; NAJEE; CHANGING FACES; and BRIAN O'NEAL.
Benny J has a 24-year son named Brian who shares the same birthday and who's in the music business also. BJS Enterprises, LLC was launched in Louisville, KY November 2004 and relocated to Charlotte, NC January 2006 in an effort to broaden its horizons in the entertainment arena. The company's new website is: www.bjsenterprises.webs.com and its primary mission is to assist independent artists, dj's, models, motivational speakers, authors, and playwrights with bookings and promotions.
He's currently working on updating his business plan to reflect the promotions and event planning components of BJS Enterprises and is currently seeking partnerships and investors. If interested, please contact Benny J. to discuss further at: bennyjsnKY@gmail.com
